Celebrating National Doctors' Day

Celebrating National Doctors' Day

National Doctors’ Day in the United States is celebrated each year on March 30th. This holiday honors physicians for the work they do for their patients, the communities they work in, and for society as a whole. It is their hard work and devotion that keeps all of us healthy and this day thanks them for doing that for us and our loved ones!

How Did National Doctors’ Day Start?

According to the Southern Medical Association, “The first Doctors' Day observance was held on March 30, 1933, by the Barrow County Alliance, in Winder, Georgia. The idea of setting aside a day to honor physicians was conceived by Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, and the recognition occurred on the anniversary of the first administration of anesthesia by Dr. Crawford W. Long in Jefferson, Georgia, in 1842.

Why did Eudora Brown Almond choose this as the date for Doctors’ Day? On that day in 1842 Dr. Crawford W. Long used an ether anesthetic for the first time and this would remain an unofficial holiday for the next 58 years.

It Becomes Official

The United States Senate and House of Representatives passed S.J. RES. #366 during the 101st United States Congress, which President Bush signed on October 30, 1990 (creating Public Law 101-473), designating Doctors' Day as a national holiday to be celebrated in March each year.

Physicians play a pivotal role in safeguarding and improving the well-being of patients. Their extensive education, training and expertise are essential in diagnosing and treating a vast array of medical conditions. Beyond their clinical roles, doctors contribute significantly to medical research, innovation and the continuous improvement of health care practices.

This day offers an opportunity for health care institutions and patients to express their gratitude and appreciation for the tireless efforts of physicians.
