Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take burn scars to heal?
Burn scars typically take 12-18 months to fully mature, depending on the depth and severity of the burn. During this time, the scar may thicken, darken, or become rigid. Early treatment, such as hydration, pressure therapy, and silicone sheets, can speed healing and improve the scar's appearance and flexibility.
What is a contracture scar, and how does it differ from other scars?
A contracture scar occurs when scar tissue tightens as it heals, restricting movement in the affected area, especially near joints. Unlike regular scars, which are primarily cosmetic, contracture scars can impair mobility and function, often requiring physical therapy or surgical intervention.
What role do silicone sheets or pressure garments play in scar treatment?
Silicone sheets and pressure garments help flatten and soften scars by reducing collagen buildup and maintaining hydration. Silicone sheets create a moist environment for healing, while pressure garments apply gentle, even pressure to improve the scar’s texture and pliability.
When can I start using silicone on my scar?
You must wait until your wound is fully closed before starting use of your silicone scar products, when your wound has begun the “maturation phase” of scar healing. In short, this means your wound is no longer oozing, bleeding, scabbing, etc, which usually takes a few weeks. However if in doubt, we also suggest consulting your doctor to see if it’s time for scar treatment.
How do I use the Gelzone Compression Wrap on burns or contractures?
For the best results we recommend the following steps for using our Gelzone Compression Wrap:
- Wrap the sheet around your scar
- Secure the wrap in place by attaching the velcro strip to the fabric backing of the sheeting
- Alternate use with Rejuvasil Silicone Scar Gel during the day for around the clock care of your scar
- When not in use, simply roll back up & store in the cardboard tube it came in
Pro Tip: when using the Compression Wrap, make sure the pressure isn’t too tight! Some compression is good, but too much tension can be damaging. (If in doubt, we recommend consulting your doctor)
Are there exercises or therapies to improve mobility in scarred areas?
Yes, physical therapy and stretching exercises are essential for maintaining flexibility and preventing stiffness in scarred areas, especially near joints. Therapies like splinting and massage can improve range of motion and reduce the risk of contractures. Always consult a healthcare professional for a tailored therapy plan.
