Build A Skincare Routine
Stumped on what you actually need in your daily regimen? Don’t worry, we got you covered!
1
Cleanser
Usually coming in the form of a gel, cream, or foam, a cleanser is used to remove dirt, sweat, product residue, dead skin cells, excess oils, and other types of skin pollutants from the skin barrier.
⭐ Double Cleansing: A 2-step method using first, an oil-based cleanser, and second, a water-based cleanser to give your skin a thorough cleaning. It is commonly used at night to help remove make-up and/or as a part of an oily or acne-prone-skin routine.
2
Toner
A gentle liquid meant to refresh your skin and remove any last traces of dirt, grime, oils, and other impurities from your pores. This helps shrink the appearance of your pores and restore your skin’s pH levels, allowing your skin to better absorb the rest of the products in your routine.

Serums & Spot Treatments
There are many different types of serums and spot treatments that address a wide range of concerns— including acne, dryness, aging, hyperpigmentation, dullness, etc. This is the most customizable part of your routine, largely depending on your skin’s needs.
Pro Tip: Whatever you use, a good rule of thumb is to layer these products from lightest to heaviest.
4
Moisturizers
A cream or lotion-like product formulated with emulsive ingredients that helps the skin retain moisture within the surface layers of skin, keeping it hydrated and supporting the structure of the skin barrier. They can come in a range of textures of lightweight and gel-like to heavier cream.

SPF
Most dermatologists recommend wearing sunscreen every single day, and wearing at least an SPF 30 or higher. Many also recommend you opt for a mineral sunscreen, as they tend to be gentler on the skin, better for the environment, and a bit more effective at shielding your skin. (However the best sunscreen is a sunscreen you’ll actually wear!)

Make-Up Remover
If you wear make-up, taking it off should be the first step of your nightly routine! There are a few methods people use for make-up removal— micellar water, double cleansing, make-up wipes (though we do NOT recommend this one, as it can be abrasive on your skin!), etc.

How It Works

Can I Mix These?
Here’s a few ingredient pairings you should AVOID at all costs!
Why Not?
Doubling the power of your skincare isn’t always for its benefit.
Together, these 2 can amplify irritating effects, making redness, stinging, peeling, dryness, & inflammation worse
Instead:
Switch It Up
Since these are each pretty powerful on their own, use only one at a time— try alternating the nights on which you use them
Why Not?
Using both of these products at the same time can lead to excessively dry skin, and increase general irritation, thanks to the high potency of both ingredients.
Instead:
Switch It Up
Try alternating back and forth each night between these 2 acne hard-hitter for an effective anti-acne regimen.
Why Not?
As 2 powerful ingredients, these 2 together can be too much for your skin, worsening redness, dryness, peeling etc.
Furthermore, Vitamin C works best in a more acidic (lower pH) environment, while retinols & retinoids work best in a more alkaline (high pH) environment, so using them together will likely result in neither working to the best of its ability.
Instead:
☀️ Vitamin C
🌑 Retinoids/Retinol
Vitamin C is an antioxidant, helping protect again pollution & sun damage, so it’s best used during the day, whilst retinol & retinoids are photosensitive, meaning they’re best used at night away from the sun.
Why Not?
Benzoyl Peroxide can actually deactivate the retinoid molecules, thus giving you no acne-fighting benefits at all.
Together they can also dry out & irritate the skin.
Instead:
☀️ Benzoyl Peroxide
🌑 Retinoids/Retinol
Use benzoyl peroxide in the morning to exfoliate & clear out your pores (be sure to wear sunscreen!!), and retinoids or retinol in the evening to help stimulate cell turnover.
Why Not?
Both of these ingredients lower your skin’s pH levels— which can be a bit too much for your skin, throwing its natural pH levels out of balance.
In turn, this can compromise the skin barrier’s health, leading to dryness, inflammation, irritation, etc.
Instead:
☀️ Vitamin C
🌑 AHA/BHA
Since Vitamin C works best in the daytime to protect against the environmental stressors of the day, use that in the morning, and exfoliate at night.
Why Not?
A double dose of the same active ingredient can actually irritate your skin, disrupting the skin barrier.
In turn, this can jeopardize the overall health of your skin, leading to dryness, inflammation, collagen breakdown, etc.
Instead:
Just use one!
Stick with one product at a time— you can alternate nights if you really want to use both products.
Why Not?
Unless you’re going to be completely washing one away (as with Double Cleansing), water & oil don’t mix, so one product may keep the other from working
Instead:
Use Water-Based First
If you plan on incorporating both water & oil-based products in your routine, start with the water-based products— and make sure they’ve fully absorbed in before applying the oil-based products.
