5 Reasons to be Thankful for Your Skin

5 Reasons to be Thankful for Your Skin

Thanksgiving is here, and it's that time of the year where we take some time to sit back and reflect on the things that we're grateful for. This year has been tough with COVID, but it's all about finding the positives! Today we want to focus your attention on something we should all be thankful for year round: OUR SKIN! Although it might seem like one of the more mundane organs, your skin does so much that many of us take for granted. Here are 5 great reasons to say thank you to your skin:

1. Skin is your body's first line of defense.

Dirt, dust, grime, and even tiny, tiny particles of heavy metals are whisked away by our skin as it works to protect our inner layers. Did you know that skin is waterproof? Anytime it rains our skin repels water and any harmful substances that may accompany it. It also filters out harmful UV rays from the sun that can cause skin cancer. Every single day our skin acts as the first line of defense against countless intruders, without us even realizing it.

2. Skin gives you all the feels.

How did you know the plate of macaroni and cheese was hot yesterday when Aunt Susan passed it to you? It was your skin. Imagine life without the ability to feel. That’s a life without skin. Our skin is the sensory organ for touch. Without it we wouldn’t know hot from cold, wet from dry, or even pain from pleasure.

3. Skin keeps you hot and cold.

Not only does skin let you sense temperature outside of your body, it also helps regulate the temperature inside your body. Sweating and shivering both occur through the skin. As your body heats up it increases blood flow to the skin causing you to sweat. When the sweat evaporates, you cool off. When it is cold your skin causes you to shiver. The vibrations constrict capillaries and help feel warmer.

4. Skin fights battles you can't even see.

Every second of every day there is a giant microscopic war being waged on the surface of your skin. On one side of the battle lines you will find viruses, bacteria, and potential infections. On the other your skin’s own Langerhans cells. These cells capture antigens and deliver them to white blood cells for elimination.

5. Skin goes where you go and grows when you grow.

One of the greatest things about our skin is its elasticity and adaptability. Our skin stretches to cover us no matter how much we grow. That means all that turkey you ate over the holiday is accounted for by your skin. It also is able to stretch and move as you run, jump, and stretch to try and work off all that turkey next week.

Your skin is pretty awesome, so it's time you say thank you. Check out some of our skincare products that can help nourish and revitalize your skin. Trust us, your skin will thank you for the love!
