Stretch marks don’t discriminate—they affect all skin tones. But for individuals with melanin-rich skin, the experience with stretch marks, also known as striae distensae, can be more visible, more persistent, and more emotionally impactful. That’s why understanding the unique challenges of treating stretch marks in skin of color is essential—and why choosing the right skincare solution matters.
At Rejuvaskin, we believe that every skin tone deserves care that works—and works safely.
How Stretch Marks Present Differently on Skin of Color
1. Darker Scarring and Hyperpigmentation
In lighter skin, early stretch marks (striae rubra) often appear pink or red. But in deeper skin tones, these same marks may look dark brown, purplish, or even gray—making them more visible and harder to conceal. Over time, these evolve into striae alba, which can appear starkly white or remain darker depending on the individual.
Stretch marks in deeper skin types also come with a higher risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)—where the skin darkens in response to irritation or trauma (McDaniel, 2002). This makes many standard treatments riskier or less effective for melanin-rich skin.
2. Treatment Risks Are Higher
Laser and ablative procedures often used to fade stretch marks can cause hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation in deeper skin tones, sometimes worsening the problem they’re meant to treat (Diehl, 2021).
What Treatments Are Actually Safe and Effective?
Microneedling
Microneedling is a safe, effective option for skin of color. It works by creating micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin production. Studies show it improves pigmentation, texture, and skin elasticity with a low risk of PIH (El-Razek et al., 2022).
Non-Ablative Laser Treatments
While not all lasers are created equal, non-ablative fractional lasers (like 1540 nm) offer promising results with fewer risks. They’re preferred for skin types IV-VI and can help rebuild dermal structure without damaging surface pigmentation (Conrado et al., 2018).
Topical Skincare: A Foundational Approach
For many, especially those with sensitive or richly pigmented skin, topical treatments are the safest, most consistent option. And when it comes to finding one you can trust, Rejuvaskin's got your back.
