Which Goes First – Eye Cream or Face Serum? How to Layer Your Skincare

Are you trying to develop a skincare routine order for using your products? Perhaps you heard that the order in which you use your products is important – that would be correct! In this blog, we’re going to answer a couple of important questions: in what order should I layer my skincare products, and does face serum go before or after eye cream?

Why Does Skincare Order Matter?

You might think you’re off the hook if you have all of the right products in your skincare arsenal; however, you might actually be wasting some of their effectiveness if you aren’t layering them properly! This in turn can sometimes compromise the health of your skin, or at the very least prevent you from seeing the results you want to.

Skincare experts and dermatologists will, therefore, recommend that you consider the order in which you layer your skincare products. Let’s take a look at some things that will impact your final skincare routine order.

Determining Your Skin Routine Order:

In What Order Should I Layer My Skincare Products?

As we determine how to layer your products, it’s important to remember a few tips:

  1. Always cleanse at the beginning. If you use makeup remover, that gets done before cleansing.
  2. Water-based products should get used before any oil-based products. The oil in skincare products tends to seal off your skin and not allow any water to pass through.

Given these things, this is the order that most skincare experts recommend. You can skip any of these steps if they don’t fit your skincare goals, but the order shouldn’t be disrupted.

  1. Makeup remover
  2. Cleanser
  3. Toner or astringent
  4. Any antioxidant or other serums
  5. Spot treatments
  6. Retinoid face serum
  7. Retinoid eye cream
  8. Any face oils
  9. Moisturizer
  10. Sunscreen

Does Face Serum Go Before Or After Eye Cream?

Here at Rejuvaskin, we recommend that you use your retinoid face serum first to give it time to soak into your skin. After you’ve applied your retinoid face serum (avoiding sensitive areas), go in with the retinoid eye cream directly under your eyes.

How To Build A Skincare Routine

Now that we’ve seen and covered why the order of your skincare routine is so important, how do you build a proper routine? How do you know what products to use?

Here at Rejuvaskin, one of our most consistent recommendations is that you use products with ingredients you can trust. All-natural creams, moisturizers, and cleansers will be less likely to irritate your skin and cause issues. Especially for people with sensitive skin, selecting the right skincare products will be of paramount importance.

When you build your skincare routine, it will take some time to iron out what your skin actually needs and likes. Be patient with yourself and allow at least 6 weeks to build a routine. During this time, stay consistent with your timing and the order of products you use. This will help your skin adjust as quickly as possible.
