The Scar Guide

Ever wondered why scar tissue looks a little bit different than your regular skin? Scars are the body’s natural way of healing, but understanding what kind of scar you’re dealing with– and how to care for it— can make all the difference in improving its appearance.

4 Tips For Healing Surgical Scars

Stage 1: HEMOSTASIS

Your body acts like a quick-fix superhero, halting bleeding and sealing wounds by turning liquid blood into a gel— also known as creating a blood clot. This protective shield keeps the damage contained while your body gears up for healing.

Stage 2: INFLAMMATORY PHASE

This is the scabbing phase. A crew of antibodies, white blood cells, and nutrients arrives, here for defense & clean up. They battle potential infections, clear debris, and set the stage for the next healing steps.

Stage 3: PROLIFERATIVE PHASE

Like a skilled builder, your body reconstructs the damaged areas. Usually about a few days into the process, the wound starts building new tissue & skin with fibroblast-generated collagen and nutrients, beginning the sealing process.

Stage 4: MATURATION PHASE

Your body's architect phase begins. Collagen bridges old and new tissue, thickening the healing areas. This is why this stage is also known as the “remodeling phase”, strengthening the new tissue’s structure. This phase takes time, but tools like silicone sheets speed up the process.

Pro Tip: This is when you can start scar products!

How Long Does It Take To Heal Scars?

Watch Dr. William Miami, board-certified plastic surgeon, explain how a wound heals, and how long it takes. Meanwhile, let’s break down the Wound Healing timeline even further:

  1. Hemostasis: Begins within the first few hours of the wound occurring
  2. Inflammation: Begins approximately within the first 4 days
  3. Proliferation: Begins within the first 2-3 weeks
  4. Maturation: Begins within the first 24 days, and can last up to 1-2 years

Silicone helps keep this process neat, orderly, and healthy.

Physician-Recommended Scar Treatment: Silicone

For maximum results, use the around the clock scar management system. Including our Scar Heal Kit & Scar Cream consistently throughout your treatment.

We recommend RejûvaSil Silicone Scar Gel during the day & Scar Fx Sheeting at night!

REJÛVASIL DURING THE DAY

During the day apply RejûvaSil Silicone Scar Gel 2-3 times to help maintain the healing environment. RejûvaSil helps relieve itchiness and discomfort associated with scars.

SCAR FX AT NIGHT

At night place Scar Fx Silicone Sheeting over your clean dry scar. The occlusive barrier provided by the silicone scar sheet helps create an ideal healing environment for your scar.

SCAR ESTHETIQUE FOR DISCOLORATION

Once your scar is flat
and smooth, apply Scar Esthetique 3-4 times daily to target remaining discoloration. Many patients see continued results through longterm use of Scar Esthetique.

⏱️ SCAR HEALING TAKES TIME

As noted above, the maturation phase of the wound healing process can take up to two years. This means healing your scar can sometimes take that long as well. Dr. William Miami advises practicing scar care on major scars for about a year to ensure the best results.

This means you’re going to need several rounds of Scar Heal Kits to keep your scar in the best healing environment possible while your body works its magic.
