It’s something you can’t avoid – wrinkles. As you age, your skin naturally develops wrinkles, scars, and lines that can be difficult to get rid of once they’ve made their appearance. Luckily, they’re not impossible to manage, especially if you develop an effective, preventative skin care regimen now.
Most people neglect taking preventative steps toward healthy skin until they’re older and start to feel the wrath of aging. Don’t be that person! Studies show that the earlier you start caring for your skin, the easier it will be to fend off wrinkles down the line. Here are five great tips on how to protect and nourish your skin now and 50 years down the line.
Step 1: Protect Your Skin From the Sun
Are you an outdoors junkie who just can’t keep themselves away from the beach, kayaking, mountain climbing, or even just getting outside to walk? We get it, the outdoors is awesome. That being said, make sure that you’re taking steps to protect your skin while you’re out there!
Wearing sunscreen every day to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays is something you simply can’t avoid. Plan on using a 30 SPF moisturizing sunscreen or higher if you’ll be outside any longer than 15 minutes. Keep in mind that the strongest rays of the sun are between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you’re out and about during those times be sure to wear a hat and sunglasses or try staying in the shade.
Protect your eyes from the sun, too! This is often the first place wrinkles show up. Wearing sunglasses and applying an anti-aging product, such as our anti-aging cream, around the eyes is another great tactic for anti-aging efforts.
Step 2: Eat A Healthy Diet and Drink Water
As you may know, healthy skin is fueled by vitamins and nutrients and lots of them. Eating a healthy, clean diet and staying hydrated can drastically help your skin fight off signs of aging. So, what should you consider including in your diet? Start by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables daily. Green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, citrus fruits, berries, and carrots are amazing for your skin’s overall health. Seafood, lamb, tuna, and salmon can provide a great source of selenium, a mineral that protects the skin. Vegetable oils, seeds, and nuts also provide your skin with Vitamin E.
Consider buying a reusable water bottle that you can take with you on the go. Drinking plenty of water is a necessity for healthy skin. Water helps flush out your system and hydrate your skin which enables your skin cells to work properly and move nutrients in and toxins out.
Step 3: Develop A Cleaning Routine and Find A Daily Moisturizer
Finding products that aren’t harsh on your face is key to creating a successful skin care regime. Wash your face daily with a mild soap and warm water and dry with a soft towel. Exfoliate your skin weekly before showering using a dry brush and body scrub. On the face use an appropriate skin scrub weekly. Apply an anti-aging cream or moisturizer designed to keep your skin hydrated and moist.
Step 4: Exercise
Exercise increases blood flow to the skin and helps flush toxins out of the skin. It reduces stress and helps with skin conditions such as eczema and acne. This applies to aging skin too. A recent study uncovered that men and women over the age of 40 who exercised frequently had thicker dermis layers and thinner stratum corneums. The participants of the study had skin that was closer in composition to 20-30-year-olds’ skin.
Figure out an exercise regime that fits best for you and your schedule, but keep in mind the sun’s peak hours if you plan on working out outside. Try exercising early in the morning or later in the afternoon in order to avoid the sun’s peak hours. If you’re planning on working out inside, then you’re in the clear.
Step 5: Avoid Smoking At All Costs
It’s no secret that smoking causes wrinkles due to the toxic chemicals found in cigarettes. Smoking decreases circulation to the skin and often smokers squint to keep the smoke from going into their eyes. “Smoker lines” is certainly a real worry as squinting and frowning will lead to premature wrinkles. If you cannot quit smoking, cutting down is a step in the right direction.
