What Is Radiation Therapy?

Side Effects of Radiation Therapy
Fatigue
Persistent tiredness from radiation-induced energy depletion, starting early in treatment
Radiation Dermatitis
A skin reaction including rashes, ulcers, and skin damage in treated areas
Gastrointestinal Issues
Diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting often result from abdominal or pelvic radiation
Dry Mouth
Reduced saliva due to salivary gland damage, common in head/neck cancer patients
Hair Loss
Hair loss in treated areas, varying by radiation dose and duration
Radiation Dermatitis
Also commonly known as Radiation Burns, this skin condition is a skin condition caused by radiation therapy, which damages the outer and underlying layers of the skin, typically occurring in the area(s) exposed to radiation. It ranges from mild redness and dryness to severe blistering, peeling, ulceration, and pain.

Symptoms:
- Redness & irritation of the skin
- Swelling of the skin
- Dry skin and peeling
- Blisters, ulcers, or skin thinning

Balanced Breakfasts
Eat balanced meals (especially breakfast) to make sure you’re getting all the nutrients you need

Stay Hydrated
It’s important when you’re not going through cancer treatment, it’s even more important when you are

Meditate
Or listen to music, practice yoga, whatever you need to combat stress & fatigue

Find Emotional Support
Find a support group, engage in counseling, or seek out loved ones who have your back to help you manage the stress of treatment

Wash Your Hands
And wear a mask, cough into your elbow, and overall practice good hygiene to avoid hygiene while your immune system is weakened
